St Paul's Letter to the Philippians was written during his captivity in prison. It is heartfelt in its language showing the Apostles paternal concern of all of the Christians in Philippi. The letters' primary purpose is to encourage, rather than to teach. St Paul wants Christians in Philippi to know that the Gospel was spreading throughout the known world He encourages them, from prison, to live the teachings they have heard from him and grow in virtue and holiness. He teaches them that even the suffering they may endure because of their faith will lead them closer to the Lord Jesus and to holiness.
