An ancient tradition affirms that the three letters written by the Apostle John, were written while he was in prison in Ephesus. He was arrested on his return from exile on the Island of Patmos. The Apostle is the author of the fourth Gospel which bears his name. He was, and is, an extraordinary theologian and a mystic. He writes of the Christians union with God, or communion, and the life of grace given to all the baptized through Jesus Christ. He explains the 3-fold enemy of the Christian life, the world, the flesh, and the devil. He warns of the spirit of antichrist and cautions Christians to whom he addresses these letters to not listen to heretics, even in their midst. Finally, and most importantly, this beloved disciple calls the reader to live in love, to live as Gods children, and love one another as Jesus Christ loved us.
