The letter of James is the first in what are called the "catholic” letters. The word means universal. It bears the name of its author and is written to the whole church. The main theme of its teaching is the essential connection between the faith that a believer in Jesus Christ professes and the way they live their lives. The Letter also explicitly reveals the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick (James 5:14-16). The letter has a developed theology of the Church and the role of elders. The letter was controversial to some of the Protestant reformers because of its clear teaching that faith is evidenced by works.
